Marine Propulsion mod. 3: Diesel Engines & Gas Turbines

Date: 3 November & 4 November

Location: Zoetermeer

Aim
To understand the main characteristics of diesel engines and gas turbines. Physical principles are used to derive machinery characteristics. Also a basic overview is given of thermodynamics processes within these engines. The module include both lectures and practical exercises.

Subject
Topics on diesel engines include:

  • Working principles
  • Indicator diagram
  • Performance
  • Power density
  • Fuel and air consumption, emissions
  • Pressure charging
  • Operating envelope
  • Thermodynamic analysis
  • Construction and installation

Gas turbines are discussed with regard to:

  • Working principles
  • Ideal simple Brayton cycle
  • Simple cycle with losses
  • Regenerative cycle
  • Cycle optimisation
  • Other advanced cycles
  • Operating envelope
  • Installation on board

Thanks to its international setting, the course offers companies in the maritime cluster an excellent opportunity to gain knowledge and to network with colleagues, clients and/or suppliers. This will enable them to position their company even better as a co-maker in the shipbuilding process.

Target group and lecturers
This module is of interest to designers, engineers and sales engineers working with system integrators, engine transmission and propulsor manufacturers/representatives, electrical engineering firms, shipyards, navies, design offices and ship owners. HME organises the module 'Characteristics of Diesel Engines and Gas Turbines' in close cooperation with with Delft University of Technology and Royal Netherlands Naval College. The trainer is the well-known and respected Prof. Douwe Stapersma.
