Maersk wants Rotterdam CO2

Date: 21 October

Maersk Oil and Maersk Tankers are going to further develop the Rotterdam CCS-network (carbon capture and storage) further, together with Rotterdam Climate Initiative (RCI). The Danish companies investigate the possibility to transport CO2, potentially originating in the Rotterdam region, by vessel to depleted oil fields in the North Sea off Denmark. There is can be used for Enhanced Oil Recovery. This squeezes out oil which can’t be explored with conventional techniques anymore and at the same time reduces CO2 emissions.

Tankers and terminal
Maersk Tankers has developed a conceptual design for a special tanker to transport large amounts of CO2 to the oil fields. In another RCI-project, also Anthony Veder develops a vessel for this purpose. Click here for more information.

Related to the sea transport, the specifications, possible locations etcetera. Of a CO2 terminal in the Rotterdam port area is investigated too.

50% reduction
The main goal of RCI is to half CO2-emmissions in the port of Rotterdam in 2025 as compared to 1990. Injection of CO2 is expected to start in 2015. In that year RCI hopes to realise a reduction of approximately 5 megaton CO2 by CCS.
