On Wednesday 5 October, First Sea Lord Admiral Sir Mark Stanhope, Commander of the Royal Navy of the United Kingdom, paid a visit to the Commander of the Royal Netherlands Navy, Vice Admiral Matthieu Borsboom. They discussed possibilities for intensifying cooperation between the Royal Netherlands Navy and the Royal Navy.
An important motive behind the visit was the strengthening of the long-standing cooperation between both countries’ submarine services. Stanhope and Borsboom signed an agreement to that effect.
Cooperation
The two navies have worked together very intensively for years. The UK/NL Landing Force, part of the UK/NL Amphibious Force, is an example of this cooperation. The British Royal Marines and the Dutch Marine Corps use the same tactics, techniques and procedures. Another example of cooperation is the work-up and training of ships’ crews. Royal Netherlands Navy crew members of frigates, supply ships and Landing Platform Docks receive part of their training in the United Kingdom.
